BOWEN CASE STUDIES

Whiplash/Shoulder Pain/Backache/Stiff Ankles (Age 26)

Peter, a tennis coach, has to be fit for his job.   He came for Bowen Therapy suffering the after effects of whiplash from 2 car accidents.  He had received prescribed treatment through his GP and private Physio.  He presented with very tight shoulder capsules and neck and complained of sharp painful twinges in both shoulders if throwing/serving a ball.  Pain was constant, ranging from a dull ache to sharp twinges.  He also suffered tight low/mid backache when working long days and complained of very stiff/tight ankles into his heels, on rising each morning.  He had not been free of pain for 4 years.

After the first treatment Peter said he felt “steamrollered” for one day.  His neck eased by 30% and he didn’t notice the tightness during the week.  His shoulders, back and heels were much improved, and at times pain free, however, all was being aggravated by his tennis coaching.  After the 3rd session he was slowed down by ankle pain for two days, and then all remaining pain and tightness disappeared from his shoulders, neck, back and heels.

He returned with a new injury for a 4th and final session after pulling a stomach muscle whilst serving.  After that he was then pain free and had come to realise that he took his body for granted and needed to make some simple lifestyle changes to improve health and posture.  Three months later he had further Bowen as sports injury preventative and now seven months on, he has had no further problems and is coping well with all the coaching demands.  He said "I was sceptical before all the treatment but amazed by its results".

Partially frozen shoulder/Worn Collar Bone (Age 49)

Steve, an upholsterer by trade had considered medically retiring due to extreme shoulder pain and restriction over many years.  The shoulder pain was like toothache at night and kept waking him and his arm was painfully restricted in all positions day and night.  In 1997 he was offered painkillers, was told he had a badly worn collarbone and would have to learn to live with the pain for the rest of his life by his GP, the hospital and chiropractor.

After his first Bowen session he was cold and trembling and needed water to drink.  He had felt tingling sensations throughout his body during treatment.  When I saw him a week later he looked a different man – younger, with less tension in his face, he was in much less pain, had noticeably more movement in his arm and looked less tired.

After three treatments, he removed the shoe heel insert required for ten years, saying he felt straighter and thought he no longer had a leg length difference.  He said the shoulder pain was no longer deep rooted; it had become negligible and felt like a bruise coming out.  Steve wrote I have noticed such a significant change, it’s unbelievable.  I can now do all the tasks I couldn’t do for years and I feel so much better in myself.  I feel more positive and energetic and can’t thank Jackie enough for all she has done”.

Bowen treatment was continued, gradually increasing the time between appointments to allow total healing, both mind and body.   Steve is still working and coping well.
